- Perfect for frequent spenders
- No annual fee
- Bonus for new users
The more you spend, the more you earn. Score double points at grocery stores, which is awesome since you don’t have to be a luxury spender to benefit from this card.
No major complaints about this card. However, the bonus offer for new members isn’t as impressive as the deals that other cards offer.
Tired of restrictions on when and where you earn rewards with your current credit card? The American Express EveryDay card, often referred to as the Amex EveryDay card, tackles that common complaint.
You can use it anywhere that accepts American Express cards, and Amex-friendly retailers are rapidly increasing. In 2017, more than 1.5 million new merchants began accepting American Express payments, and acceptance has continued to increase in 2018. With growth like that, there’s an excellent chance your favorite restaurants and retailers will accept Amex cards soon -- if they don’t already.
AMERICAN EXPRESS EVERYDAY CREDIT CARD REVIEW
The Amex EveryDay card lives up to its moniker. After all, few cards reward everyday spenders as well as this popular piece of plastic.
Sure, you can earn higher-value rewards with other American Express cards, like the Starwood Preferred Guest card or the Hilton Honors Ascend card, but you’re limited to specific purchase categories or redemption options. That’s why many people choose the Amex EveryDay card over hotel cards and airline cards.
This card is also a great choice if you want to transfer your balance from another card. The Amex EveryDay card boasts a 0% introductory APR for the first 15 months, and this promotional rate covers balance transfers as well as new purchases.
AMERICAN EXPRESS EVERYDAY CREDIT CARD REWARDS AND PERKS
American Express gives you plenty of flexibility when it comes to redemption options for the EveryDay card. You can redeem rewards for merchandise or gift cards, or you can shop with reward points, use points for travel rewards, or transfer points to participating travel rewards programs. More than 500 brands participate in the Membership Rewards Program, so it’s easy to find something worthy of your points.
Points accumulate at a rate of 2 points per dollar at U.S. supermarkets and 1 point per dollar at other retailers. There’s a limit of $6,000 per year for supermarket purchases, but you can earn unlimited points for other purchases. There’s also a 20% point bonus for qualifying purchases if you use your card at least 20 times per billing cycle.
Want to rack up points quickly? Spend at least $1,000 during your first 3 months as a cardholder to score 15,000 Membership Rewards Points.
AMERICAN EXPRESS EVERYDAY CREDIT CARD BENEFITS
American Express is known for treating its cardholders well, so it’s not surprising that the Amex EveryDay offers numerous perks. There are basic perks, like the Roadside Assistance Hotline and fraud protection, that even prepaid debit cards from American Express have access to, as well as the following benefits:
- Extended warranty coverage
- Payment flexibility (you can carry a balance, which isn’t something every American Express card offers)
- Travel accident insurance
- Rental car insurance
- Purchase Protection when theft and/or an accident occurs for an item bought with this credit card
- Access to special discounts just for American Express cardholders
- Free 2-day shipping from ShopRunner stores
These benefits may not seem too impressive when you compare them with cards that offer travel perks, but keep in mind this is a card for everyday use.
AMERICAN EXPRESS EVERYDAY CREDIT CARD COSTS AND FEES
Many people hate cards with an annual fee. Lucky for you, the Amex EveryDay doesn’t charge one. Ever.
There are other fees, though. Let’s run through them:
- Foreign transaction fee of 2.7% of each transaction after converting it to U.S. dollars
- Up to $38 for late payments
- Up to $38 for returned payments
- Either $5 or 3% of the amount of each cash advance, whichever is greater
In addition to the the fee referenced above, cash advances also carry a variable APR of 26.99%. The variable APR for purchases and balance transfers ranges from 14.74% to 25.74%, and it’s based on your credit history. There’s a penalty APR of 29.99%, so be careful not to miss payment due dates.
Take advantage of the introductory APR for purchases and balance transfers. It’s 0% for purchases made during the first 15 months you have the card. There’s also a 0% APR for balance transfers during the first 15 months, but you have to transfer your balances during your first 60 days as a cardholder.
DOES THE AMERICAN EXPRESS EVERYDAY CREDIT CARD MAKE SENSE FOR ME?
Yes, if you have a stable credit history and want to get rewarded for everyday purchases like groceries, gas, and utilities. The Amex EveryDay is not the right card for you if you have bad credit or prefer a card with high-value rewards for hotels or airlines.
Keep in mind that this is a credit card, not a charge card. American Express offers several charge cards that require you to pay your balance in full each month. You can carry a balance with the Amex EveryDay if you want, and the card offers a practical Pay It/Plan It feature that lets you decide how to handle your payments.
