Faveable Review

Finding the right travel credit card can be tough. But if you’re a Marriott enthusiast or you want to ensure you get a lot of value out of your credit card, the Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card is a solid choice.

Not only does the card offer a significant sign-up bonus and great rewards, but you’ll also get a perk every year that more than makes up for the card’s annual fee.

Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card review highlights

The card recently underwent an overhaul, likely due to the impending merger of the Marriott Rewards program and the Starwood Preferred Guest program.

With this new card, you’ll get a high rewards rate on all of your purchases and a solid anniversary rewards to keep the value coming. While the card is a little less flexible than general travel cards as far as redemption goes, it’s still a solid choice if you stay in hotels frequently.

In addition to a great rewards program, the card also offers some extra travel perks that you can use every time you take a trip.

Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card rewards and perks

To start you off, the card offers 75,000 bonus points after you spend $3,000 in the first three months that you have the card. With most industry experts pegging the value of Marriott points about 0.9 cents apiece on average, that bonus is worth $675.

Going forward, you’ll earn 6 points per dollar spent at participating Marriott and Starwood hotels, and 2 points per dollar everywhere else. That base rewards rate is a huge step up from the previous Marriott credit card, which only offered 1 point per dollar on non-Marriott spending.

The new rewards rate puts it in competition with some of the best rewards credit cards on the market, let alone travel rewards.

The card also provides users with a free anniversary night every year when they pay their annual fee. The free night allows you to stay at any participating hotel that costs up to 35,000 points for a night’s stay.

Again, taking the 0.9 cents per point valuation, that bonus is worth $315, which is more than three times the card’s annual fee. In other words, you don’t even need to use the card regularly to get a lot of value out of it.

Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card benefits

In addition to a standout rewards program, the Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card offers a suite of other benefits that can make your life a lot easier every time you travel.

For example, the card affords you automatic silver elite status with Marriott hotels. Here’s a quick summary of what you get with that level of status:

  • Earn 20% bonus points on every stay
  • Free standard in-room Wi-Fi
  • Priority late checkout
  • Reservation guarantee
  • A 10% discount at Marriott-operated gift shops
  • Exclusive savings and offers
  • Dedicated reservation and service phone numbers

If that’s not enough, the card offers some other benefits you can use during your travels, including:

  • Baggage delay insurance
  • Lost luggage reimbursement
  • Trip delay reimbursement
  • No foreign transaction fees

All in all, the card is a great travel companion.

Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card costs and fees

As with any other top-tier travel credit cards, this one charges an annual fee. You’ll pay $95 a year, and it’s not waived the first year. The card’s lack of a foreign transaction fee can make up for it, though, if you spend a lot of time overseas.

The average foreign transaction fee is 3%, so you’d just need to spend $3,167 per year overseas to get enough savings to make up for the annual fee. Of course, you don’t need to do that if you’re already using your annual free night.

One major drawback to the card is its interest rate. Even the card’s lowest rate is above-average, which can be a deal breaker if you plan to carry a balance. In fact, paying interest on this card could neutralize many of its benefits.

As a result, it’s always best to avoid interest by paying your balance in full each month.

Does the Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card make sense for me?

The Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card is one of the best hotel credit cards on the market. Not only is it great for regular travels but it’s also worthwhile for someone who doesn’t spend a lot at hotels.

Even if you use the card’s benefits just once a year when you get your free anniversary night, you’re getting a lot of value out of this card.

As such, it’s a good card to keep on hand, even if you don’t plan to use it for your everyday spending.

If you don’t really travel at all, though, or if you want more flexibility when redeeming your points, it may be a good idea to check out some of the other top travel credit cards to see if you can find a better option for your needs.
