Airline credit cards are a great way to earn valuable travel rewards miles for your favorite airline, and the Gold Delta SkyMiles® credit card from American Express does a great job at balancing costs with great perks and rewards. Follow along with this review to learn more about the Gold Delta SkyMiles® credit card and if it may be a good fit for your needs.
Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card review
The Gold Delta SkyMiles® credit card is a premium American Express travel rewards credit card. Cardholders earn 2 miles per dollar spent at Delta and 1 mile per dollar everywhere else. New cardholders can start with 60,000 bonus miles after spending $3,000 on purchases within 4 months of opening a new account opened by 9/19/2018. After this date, the bonus is likely to return to 30,000 points after $1,000 in purchases in 3 months.
But wait, there’s more! This card also offers in-flight perks specific to Delta. Cardholders get priority boarding and your first bag checked free (worth $50 round-trip). If you fly round-trip twice per year and check a bag, that is enough value to pay for the $95 annual fee, which is waived the first year. You also get a 20% discount on in-flight purchases as a statement credit, so your drinks and snacks won’t cost the full sticker price.
If you are loyal to Delta and fly them as a preferred airline, the Gold Delta SkyMiles® credit card may make a lot of sense. It doesn’t have the best rewards program out there, but the miles add up fast and additional perks when flying Delta could earn this card a slot in your wallet.
Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card rewards and perks
The primary reward from this credit card comes in the form of Delta SkyMiles®. SkyMiles are redeemable for flights on Delta and partner airlines in the SkyTeam alliance, including popular airlines around the globe.
You earn 2 miles per dollar spent directly at Delta and 1 mile for every other dollar spent on regular purchases using this credit card. There are some general miles and points cards with stronger rewards programs, though not Delta specific. A good alternative for Delta rewards is the American Express Platinum card, though it has a much higher annual fee.
This card starts you out right with a great signup bonus. Currently get 60,000 bonus points (that’s worth about $720 according to The Points Guy) after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first 4 months you have the card. That is double the recent 30,000-point bonus, so act fast if you want to earn big rewards for your new card.
Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card credit card benefits
Benefits from this card don’t stop at SkyMiles®. It comes with a handful of useful benefits for frequent travelers no matter where your adventures take you.
When flying on Delta, cardholders get a first bag checked free (worth $25 one-way or $50 round-trip) and a 20% statement credit for in-flight purchases. You’ll also board with priority boarding so you don’t have to battle for overhead bin space for your carry on.
The card charges no foreign transaction fees, a nice perk for any international travel.
As a high-end American Express credit card, you also get car rental loss and damage insurance, plus access to the Global Assist® hotline if you run into trouble and need help while away from home.
When shopping with this card, you get an automatic extended warranty, return protection, new purchase protection (includes dropped phones!), and 2-day shipping from a wide range of online stores through ShopRunner.
Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card costs and fees
This is a great card, but it isn’t free. This card charges a $95 annual fee, which is waived the first year. But as we mentioned previously, if you fly Delta at least twice per year with checked bags, you’ll make that fee up in no time.
For purchases and balance transfers, this card charges variable rate interest 17.49% APY to 26.49% APY depending on your credit history. Rates can change at any time with market conditions. For a cash advance, you’ll pay a higher 26.99%
If you miss a payment or have a payment returned by your bank, a 29.99% APR penalty rate kicks in for at least six months. But you will always pay on time, so you don’t have to worry about that part… right?
The card charges 3% ($5 minimum) for any cash advances. Late and returned payments cost up to $38 per occurrence. There is no foreign transaction fee.
Does the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card make sense for me?
If you don’t regularly fly on Delta, you can skip this card and find something better. But dedicated Delta customers, and anyone who lives near a Delta hub (we're talking to you Atlanta), this card may be perfect for your needs.
For a competitive annual fee, you get things like checked bags and other valuable perks on your Delta travels. When you factor in the valuable signup bonus, it becomes an easy decision. Regular Delta frequent flyers with good credit are smart to carry this card to the airport and beyond.
