The Discover it® Chrome is a basic cash-back credit card that offers double the rewards on restaurants and gas purchases. But compared with similar credit cards, its rewards and benefits don’t really stack up.
The one redeeming quality of the card is its sign-up bonus, which makes the card worthwhile for the first year. Once that year is over, though, you may want to consider comparable cards.
Read on to learn more about the Discover it® Chrome card and find out if it’s a good choice for you.
Discover it® Chrome review - Highlights
Discover cards aren’t known for their flashy perks or massive sign-up bonuses, but the card issuer’s cashback match is one of the best bonuses in the business.
Simply use your card like normal for the first year and Discover will match all the cash back you earn during that time. There’s no need to meet a minimum spending requirement and the amount you can get matched is unlimited.
So, if you earn $300 in cash back the first year, you’ll get a $300 bonus on your first anniversary. And if you earn $1,000 in cash back, you’ll get a $1,000 bonus.
While this approach to a sign-up bonus doesn’t offer the same instant gratification as what most other credit cards provide, it can be a lot more lucrative — especially considering the card has no annual fee.
The card also offers a 0% introductory APR promotion on both purchases and balance transfers, which we’ll cover in a minute.
Discover it® Chrome rewards and perks
The card offers 2% cash back at gas stations and restaurants on up to $1,000 spent in combined purchases each quarter, and 1% back everywhere else.
But during the first year, you’re essentially earning 4% back and 2% back on those categories, respectively. That’s tough to beat, considering no cash-back card with a 2% base rewards rate offers bonus rewards of any kind.
Earn even more rewards by shopping online through the Discover Deals portal. The card issuer partners with several retailers to give you more cash back when you go through them.
When it comes time to redeem your rewards, you have several options from which you can choose, including:
- Direct deposit into a checking or savings account
- A statement credit
- Charitable donations
- Gift cards
- Pay with your cash back at select merchants, including Amazon.com
One nice thing about the gift card option is that you can typically get the gift cards at a discount. For example, a $25 gift card may cost only $20 in rewards, giving you a 25% boost in value for your rewards.
There’s no minimum amount that you need to have before you can redeem — at least for non-gift card redemptions. If you want to redeem $0.01 worth of cash back, you can.
Many other cash-back credit cards require that you have at least $25 or $50 worth of rewards before you can access them.
In addition to offering a flexible rewards program, the card also offers a 0% introductory APR on purchases and balance transfers for 14 months. That should give you plenty of time to pay down a large purchase or a transferred balance from a high-interest credit card.
Discover it® Chrome benefits
The card’s main value proposition is its rewards program and 0% introductory APR. But there are some other benefits you’ll get from the card whether you use it regularly or not. Benefits include:
- U.S.- based customer service available 24/7
- Free access to your FICO credit score
- Get notified when your Social Security number is found on thousands of risky websites
- Freeze your account in seconds through your Discover mobile app
Discover it® Chrome costs and fees
The card has no annual fee like most other cash-back credit cards. But unlike most cash-back credit cards, it doesn’t charge any foreign transaction fees.
Just note that Discover isn’t widely accepted overseas. It does partner with the Diner’s Club and JCB payment networks, but a merchant still has the right to refuse your Discover card even if it accepts those other networks.
As a result, it’s a good idea to bring a Visa or Mastercard as a backup card if you’re planning a trip abroad.
In addition to charging no annual fee and no foreign transaction fees, the Discover it® Chrome doesn’t charge a late fee on your first late payment or a penalty APR if you pay late.
That said, it’s always wise to pay on time and in full to avoid any negative impact to your credit score, not to mention interest charges.
While the card offers a 0% introductory APR on balance transfers, it does charge a 3% fee for every transfer, so keep that in mind when you’re trying to figure out if you should do a balance transfer.
It’s also important to note that once the 0% APR promotion is over, the card’s interest rate range is wide, and you could end up with a super-high rate. But again, paying off your bill in full each month helps you avoid interest.
Does the Discover it® Chrome make sense for me?
The Discover it® Chrome offers some decent rewards for the first year through the issuer’s cashback match promotion. But 2% on gas and restaurants and 1% everywhere else isn’t all that special compared with other top cash-back credit cards.
So, before you apply, compare the card with similar cards. Especially check out the Discover it®, which offers 5% cash back on certain categories that change every three months. With the cashback match promotion, that means you can earn 10% back on certain everyday purchases.
As you compare these two cards and other cash-back cards, keep your spending habits in mind and pick a card that either offers bonus rewards on some of your biggest spending categories, or a card that offers great rewards on all purchases.
