Belkin WeMo Light Switch

Best Smart Light for Smart Homes

Why people love it
  • Awesome product; amazing light bulbs
  • Easy to install
  • Incredible control; customizable timer

This works with whatever light bulbs are in your fittings, you simply replace the switches themselves. However, those switches can become a bit pricey.

This Wi-Fi enabled WeMo Light Switch allows you to turn lights on and off from anywhere, and can be controlled remotely with smartphones, tablets, or anything with Internet connection. And, it's been a #1 Amazon Best Seller. That's hot.

This system is more an approach to Smart-homing than it is a set of Smart lights. You’ll need to keep that in mind if you’re only looking for Smart lights. And, we say that because everyone has different needs when shopping for lights or home automation.

What systems does it connect to? WeMo lights connect to the free app (as do the plug points that enable you to control small appliances and desk lamps). But, it also works with Amazon Alexa voice responce and can even connect to Nest and IFTTT.

How does it connect? There’s no hub necessary, but you will need to replace every switch in your home that you want to control. Once you’ve done that, you can connect to your switches and plug points over WiFi. That works remarkably well for some people and not so well for others; it depends on what you want out of your Smart home.

What about the light bulbs then? This is a sticky point for the inclusion of WeMo as Smart lights. They’re not necessarily smart. The system is a means of controlling your existing lights, which means you can fit the world’s most energy-sucking bulbs into your ceiling fans or use a blue bulb rather than a white one if you'd like. So, the lumens, wattage, and everything else is up to you.

Cost for an individual fitting? WeMo offers a small range of products that vary in price. For a basic wall switch, you’ll shell out roughly $45 per switch. And you’ll need to install them yourself (or pay over $100 if you book that service through Amazon). If you want to plug a table lamp into a WeMo point in the wall, you’ll pay $35 per switch (though we’re assuming you don’t need a technician for that). There’s also an Insight plug point available that will give you details regarding your energy usage. So what you pay is entirely up to you! We like that.
