You may have heard that you don’t need a garlic press. There are plenty of celebrity chefs willing – and more importantly able – to crush garlic just using their knives.

If you’re one of them… good for you. Most of us aren’t.

That doesn’t mean we don’t love garlic; it’s in so many favorite recipes after all. It’s just that it’s a lot more difficult to manage this ingredient without a garlic press.

Bon Appétit even ran a post, In Defense of Garlic, because there really isn’t a good reason why home cooks should try to live without a garlic press. You can do it, but it’s a pain. (Interestingly Saveur has a post by the same name – and it recommends our budget pick!)

Mincing Garlic Without a Press:

In case you’re wondering how to mince garlic without one, this is the standard knife method. This wild fork method is good in a pinch, but it takes way more effort to get it right.

Mincing Garlic WITH a Press:

Okay, we know we don’t need to tell you how to mince garlic with a press. What we are going to mention is that you don’t want a $5 garlic press unless you need it for a single meal and you truly want a disposable garlic press. They’re just not worth it. You can get an awesome garlic press for under $20 which can be used time and time again – and it will change your life.

If you’re willing to pay double that amount, you will have a garlic press that will last an entire lifetime. And, let’s face it, you probably don’t need more than one – even if you have a professional kitchen. (In which case, you may not even need one.)

Once you’ve selected a garlic press, you’ll probably wonder about the other time saving gadgets you’ve been missing. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered there too!
