They tell you to eat more chicken when you’re trying to watch that waistline. And, we don’t need to tell you who they are, right? It’s everyone. And from the moment you were told to steer clear of hamburgers (and dutifully made the move to chicken like a good boy), every fast food joint in the world began offering chicken sandwiches. It’s not KFC any longer. In fact, you can get a chicken sandwich (and a pretty decent one at that) just about anywhere.

In our search for the best sandwiches, we consulted blogs for recommendations, conferred with our friends and spent time eating no matter how torturous it was. We looked at fried chicken as well as oven roasted and grilled. There were more than a few honorable mentions that didn’t make the cut (Schlotzsky’s, Quiznos, and Boston Market to name a few), but you’d easily find those on a list of 10. And, there were a few surprises too.

Ready to drool a bit? Grab a napkin (really, you don’t want to slobber on your computer or phone), and then get in the car. You’ll want these sandwiches now.

You can find Subway everywhere. It’s one of the most prolific American chains, making it to countries that even Starbucks can’t find a market in. But, that’s not why this sandwich is here. It’s because it’s delicious, and you can add all the veggies you want. It’s the customization that counts if you’re a picky eater. Lettuce and olives? Tomatoes and pickles? It’s up to you how deluxe you want your sandwich to be.

If you opt for a standard 6” sandwich without cheese or heavy dressings, you score with all of 5 grams of fat. Want to add mayo or ranch? You’ll be bumping that total up dramatically - fortunately, Subway offers a few tempting low-fat options.

This chicken sandwich features:

  • Oven roasted chicken fillet
  • White bread
  • Your choice of veggies
  • Calories: 320
  • Fat: 5
  • Carbs: 47

Carl’s Jr.’s Big Chicken Fillet has way too much punctuation in the name, but the flavors of this sandwich are just right. It’s simple, which means that their Southern Spices must be something special. The chicken fillet is typically quite large which is a bonus for the price, but that does mean it can get a bit soggy unless you’re super speedy (or too drunk to notice).

This sandwich is really not good for you, but the flavor will still make you want it. You should just know that it’s heavy on everything you don’t want from fat to carbs. Sorry.

This chicken sandwich features:

  • Crispy chicken fillet with Southern Spices
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Mayo
  • Freshly baked bun
  • Calories: 760
  • Fat: 41
  • Carbs: 65

Nando’s features Portuguese-style chicken (though the chain originated in South Africa and is the talk of London town). That means the deliciousness comes from Peri-Peri sauce rather than added fat. And that’s important if you want a craving-worthy chicken sandwich without piling on the pounds. Nando’s doesn’t put chicken in the deep-fryer; these babies are flame-grilled. And don’t worry, they’ve got a mild version of their Peri-Peri hot sauce (and a lemon and herb variety if you’re that guy).

This chicken sandwich falls a little short of Subway’s healthy sandwich (without fatty sauces or cheese), but it’s leaps and bounds ahead of any fried chicken sandwich with a mere 11 grams of fat (and it matches Subway on carbs).

This chicken sandwich features:

  • Flame-grilled chicken breast
  • Arugula
  • Tomato
  • Pickled red onions
  • Peri-Peri mayo
  • Toasted Portuguese roll
  • Calories: 445
  • Fat: 11
  • Carbs: 46

When you want serious crispy chicken, you’d better think of Popeye’s. Now, of course, you might still have a KFC closer to you, but when you can pop over to… well, you know where to go. The spicy breading on the chicken will make you salivate long before you get it close to your mouth, and the other ingredients simply complement it all nicely. Unfortunately, it’s less of a baguette than we’d like, but can you win them all for under $5? Apparently not.

This isn’t the worst chicken sandwich nutritionally speaking, but it’s right up there. That means you probably can’t indulge as much as you’d like, but you’re still going to cross town every now and again to pick up one of these Chicken Po’Boys from Popeye’s.

This chicken sandwich features:

  • Two fried chicken tenders
  • Lettuce
  • Pickles
  • Mayo
  • French baguette-style roll
  • Calories: 660
  • Fat: 34
  • Carbs: 61

Chick-fil-A doesn’t mess around. They’re all about chicken, and they do it well. Their chicken breading is delicious, and the service is nothing to turn your nose up at either. But the reason this chicken sandwich is a winner has everything to do with the composition of ingredients - and the fact that it doesn’t become soggy as you eat it.

In terms of calories, Chick-fil-A’s Deluxe Chicken Sandwich falls right in the middle of the others featured. The same goes for the grams of fat. But it boasts the lowest amount of carbs. Go figure.

This chicken sandwich features:

  • Fried chicken
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Chick-fil-A sauce
  • American cheese
  • Toasted, buttered bun
  • Calories: 500
  • Fat: 23g
  • Carbs: 43g
