In the past couple of years, we’ve seen a dramatic shift in men’s hair styling products. It’s not that men weren’t using hair creams and styling gels in the past; it’s that the sales and widespread use of styling products nowhere near rivaled female spend or use.
These days, you might question whether men care more about their precious locks than women; they might. According to statistics released by Google, 2015 was the first year that there was more interest in men’s hair than women’s.
Okay, the guys didn’t win by an extreme margin – a mere 6 percent, but it’s still a little incredible given the amount of time women spend on their hair (and the sheer number of potential styles they concoct).
In 2016, male grooming businesses are forecasted to expand into a $21 billion industry.
With celebrity styles pushing a lot of the trends, and men’s experiences with professional grooming, there’s no reason to suspect that we’ll revert to the dark ages of men’s hair styling products.
If you don’t have at least one styling product in your bathroom, you might be the only guy (with hair on his head) to make that claim. Men without hair on their head – due to choice or circumstance – are, of course, forgiven.
But, with all the different grooming products available today, it is truly easy to get confused between which product does what. After all, what is the difference between a gel and a pomade? More importantly, which one is right for your hair?
At faveable, we’ve got you covered with all of our hair care guides and the best hair products for men. This way, you’ll always know which product to turn to for your hair styling needs (and the hair you have, of course).
So, how do you know if you need a styling hair cream? It’s the grooming product you’re after if you don’t want an overly styled look, but you want a bit more control. They’re perfect for curly and frizzy hair, but don’t rule them out if that doesn’t apply to you. These products are excellent at keeping hair manageable – and they’re ace for men with thinning hair that don’t want to apply too much product. Sound like the product you need? Keep reading.
Are there different types of styling creams?
Absolutely! But, there isn’t as much variation as you might think. You’ll find that creams range in texture between lotions all the way to almost-wax. And, some are more committed to offering stronger hold than they worry about reshaping your do as the day wears on.
Generally speaking, however, they’re all committed to medium hold and texture without too much shine. That made it extraordinarily difficult to weed through the hundreds of men’s styling creams on the market. To create our shortlist, we combed through men’s magazines, looked at the recommendation of barbers and hair stylists, read thousands of reviews, and couldn’t help but splurge on some of the most intriguing products. Some 40 hours later, we ended up with these styling creams for men.
What to look for in men’s styling creams?
Now, just because there aren’t extreme differences in men’s hair styling creams, that doesn’t mean every product will work for every guy. You’ll need to take into account the tremendous range of men’s hair. Some men have thin hair, others battle thick stands; you’ll find dry hair, oily hair, curly hair, straight hair and just about everything in between.
You’ll want to consider that, along with the factors we took into account when considering these products. Aside from hair types, we looked at hold, duration, reshapability, shine levels, greasiness, flakage, smell, and washability.
We absolutely love the D:fi D:struct Pliable Molding Crème because it tackled every single one of these concerns remarkably well. It works across the broadest range of men’s hair types. And, let’s face it, at under $2.50 per ounce, it competes with budget options (that we’re even included because they don’t do the job). It was a tough call, however, between the D;Fi and the cream produced by their parent company, American Crew.
