Faveable Review

If you want a credit card that balances great travel rewards and offers bonus points when shopping for groceries and gas, the American Express EveryDay® Preferred credit card may be just what you’re looking for. This card is packed with value including 3x American Express points per dollar at US supermarkets, 2x points at US gas stations, and 1x everywhere else.

But the points earning doesn’t stop there. You can bring home a 50% point bonus every month when you use the card for at least 30 transactions.

Those points add up to free and discounted travel around the world, and new cardholders can earn a 15,000 point bonus. While it has a $95 annual fee, it is easy to earn that back and then some in value. Follow along to learn more.

American Express EveryDay® Preferred review

I’ll start with a disclaimer. This is the card I use as my “everything else” card for daily spend. I think this is a great card, and it is so good I carry it in my own wallet every day.

This card from American Express is made to be the card you grab for daily purchases. The 3x points at grocery stores (up to $6,000 in purchases per year), 2x points at gas stations, and 1x everywhere else means you can use the card where you likely spend most and earn valuable bonus points.

The real value comes for those who use the card at least 30 times per month (easy with a family and an authorized user) who get an extra 50% bonus for all points they earned that month. That includes the bonus points at the grocery store and gas station for up to 4.5 points per dollar on your groceries.

If this card is your regular card for daily purchases, you can easily earn 4.5 points per dollar on groceries, 3 points for gas, and 1.5 points everywhere else. Sure, the card has an annual fee, but the $95 is easy to earn back and more in award travel.

This card gets a solid A+ rating and is one of the best daily purchase cards on the market today for anyone who makes 30 or more purchases in an average month. If you think you might not get that number of transactions, keep in mind that even small purchases, like 50 cents at a parking meter, count!

You can get a ton of value right away with 15,000 bonus Membership Rewards points after $1,000 in purchases in the first three months after opening a new account. That is worth about $300 in free travel right from the start!

American Express EveryDay® Preferred rewards and perks

The primary benefit of the American Express EveryDay® Preferred card is the Membership Rewards points you earn as a bonus for a new account and as rewards for everyday purchases.

You’ll earn 3x points per dollar at US supermarkets up to $6,000 in combined purchases per year, 2x points per dollar at US gas stations, and 1 point per dollar everywhere else. Those valuable Membership Rewards points are worth around 2 cents each, which makes them a wonderful reward for your everyday shopping.

You can add an extra 50% to every point you earn in a month (not including the bonus) with 30 purchase transactions per statement period. If you use it regularly, that brings you a huge number of points for common purchases.

You can start out earning a 15,000-point bonus after spending $1,000 on purchases in the first three months after opening a new account. That offsets the cost of the first three years of annual fees alone!

American Express Membership Rewards points are redeemable directly for free travel and other redemption options through the American Express Membership Rewards portal. To get an even better value per point, transfer points 1:1 to a partner airline (or hotel) for an award booking.

High value transfer partners include Delta,, Emirates, Etihad, Singapore, Virgin Atlantic, Air Canada, Air France KLM, Alitalia, and All Nippon as 1:1 transfer partners.
